Queen could have racked up £1bn rent during her 63-year reign
The Queen would have forked out over £1bn had she had paid rent on Buckingham Palace and her other six properties during her 63 year and seven month reign.
As Queen Elizabeth II becomes the UK’s longest serving monarch, lettings agent Rentify has crunched the figures to see how much she might have paid had any of her properties had been rentals.
The figures put Buckingham Palace as the most expensive of the Queen’s residences, estimating a rent of £303,340 a month for the 240-bedroom central London property. This saw the Palace eclipse the average rent for the SW1 area by almost 2,000 per cent.
That also excludes the £150m needed to keep the palace in good shape.
Second on the list was Windsor Castle. The Berkshire property is estimated to command a rent of £129,375 per month for its 225 bedrooms and 13 acres of land – an eye-watering 5,265 per cent higher than the average rent of a four-bedroom home in the area, which stands at £2,300 per month.
This makes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s residence at Anmer Hall in Norfolk look like a bargain, at an estimated £14,000 a month.
“Royal properties will always command a royal price tag, and these estimates show that even royalty would not be exempt from the effect of astronomic London rents,” commented George Spencer, chief executive of Rentify, said.
