Police look into Nalbandian assault claim
ARGENTINA’S David Nalbandian is under police investigation for alleged assault after injuring a Queen’s Club line judge in Sunday’s Aegon Championships final.
Nalbandian was beating Marin Cilic when in frustration he kicked a panel in front of Andrew McDougall, cutting the latter’s shin, and was immediately disqualified and given a maximum fine of £6,400.
“We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships on June 17,” said a spokesman for Scotland Yard. “A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault.”
This latest development significantly worsens an already undesirable situation for Nalbandian, who also had his £36,500 prize money and 150 ATP points withdrawn.
Had he secured victory, he would have received 250 ATP points and climbed into the world’s top 32 to become a seed at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
