Pearce hints England boss will be named in next two weeks
ENGLAND chiefs are running out of time to name a replacement for Fabio Capello after it emerged an internal deadline has been set for two weeks’ time.
Interim boss Stuart Pearce let slip that the squad for this summer’s European Championships would be named on 10 May – whether by him or a permanent successor. Pearce, who already runs the England Under-21 and Team GB Olympic sides, revealed the date yesterday while discussing when he would name his squad for London 2012.
“We can’t pick the [Olympic] squad until the European Championship squad is picked, which will be around 10 May,” he said.
Tottenham’s Harry Redknapp remains favourite for the job but Pearce reiterated his willingness to lead the national team at Euro 2012. He added: “I’ve no idea whether I’ll be selecting it but I fully expect, whether it’s me or the next man, that he’ll select the squad around that time, because the season ends on 13 May and the players need to know.”
The Football Association have insisted they will not appoint Capello’s successor until late in the season. West Brom’s Roy Hodgson is Redknapp’s main rival.
