One of the top candidates for Microsoft CEO just got snapped up by Qualcomm
A day after rumours circulated that Steve Mollenkopf could be one of the top picks for the Microsoft CEO job, Qualcomm has announced that he'll be its CEO and president.
Mollenkopf will take the lead from 4 March 2014 at the chip giant. He's been at the company for nearly 20 years, and replaces Dr. Paul Jacobs.
"We have the highest degree of confidence that his leadership will further expand Qualcomm’s impressive record of innovation and continued stockholder value creation," said Sherry Lansing, presiding director of Qualcomm’s Board of Directors.
Microsoft is searching for a new CEO after Steve Ballmer announced that he would retire by August 2014, saying that while there is never a perfect time for a transition, that "now is the right time."
In November Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said that he was pleased with the software giant's progress in its hunt for a replacement to Ballmer.
Who could take the top job at Microsoft?
