October’s too soon for Qatar World Cup decision, say clubs
EUROPE’S top football teams have urged governing body Fifa not to rush into a decision about switching the 2022 Qatar World Cup to winter.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter asked his executive committee to discuss the plan at next month’s meeting, amid speculation that a change is increasingly likely.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, president of the European Club Association, which represents more than 200 leading sides, said it was their right to be heard and consulted.
“I personally believe there is no hurry and I don’t understand why Fifa would like to make an early decision in October,” he added.
“I think that nine years is more than enough to do this very sensibly and prudently, in the best interests of football.”
Blatter argues it is too hot to stage the World Cup in Qatar during summer, while Europe’s top divisions, including England’s Premier League, oppose the switch as it will disrupt their calendars.
