Nadal cements No1 status and reaches semis
WORLD No1 Rafael Nadal admits even he is shocked by the success of his comeback season, after ensuring that he will see in 2014 at the top of the rankings.
The Spaniard cemented his position by beating Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka yesterday at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London.
Nadal, who spent seven months out with chronic knee trouble before embarking on a run of 10 titles from 13 events, won 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) to secure his place in the last four.
“There are a lot of emotions today. I was a bit lucky but I’m happy to be through to the semi-finals in the last tournament of the year,” he said.
“After missing this tournament last year, it’s been an unbelievable comeback year. Being No1 at the end of the season is something really difficult as there are some unbelievable competitors out there.”
Also in Group A, Czech Tomas Berdych beat Nadal’s compatriot David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4. The win last night keeps alive the 28-year-old’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
