Murray to meet Djokovic after reaching Miami quarter-finals
BRITISH No1 Andy Murray will meet Novak Djokovic in the Sony Open quarter-finals after yesterday breezing past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets in Miami.
Murray won 6-4, 6-1 and will now meet the Serbian world No2 in a repeat of last year’s Wimbledon final in which the Scot triumphed.
The 26-year-old requested painkillers to ease discomfort on his back during the first set. But Davis Cup captain Leon Smith will hope there are no lasting ill-effects, having named Murray to lead his team in next week’s quarter-final with Italy.
Dan Evans and James Ward are also in the team, though only one can fill the second singles slot. Colin Fleming has been named Murray’s doubles partner, while Ross Hutchins will travel as a reserve, just months after being given the all-clear from Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The winners play Switzerland or Kazakhstan in the semi-finals.
Smith also declared himself “flattered” to be mentioned in the running to become Murray’s new coach. The pair worked together when Murray was a teenager.
