Monty’s trio have just the right blend
MONTY described them yesterday as the “best non-playing team Europe has ever assembled” – and it’s pretty hard to disagree with him.
With British and European golf at its peak, it was important the captain chose three men who were not only well respected by their peers but also still playing on the Tour.
He’s got that in all three of these guys and I think they will do a tremendous job in their attempts to bring the trophy back home.
Darren Clarke is a genius pick. He’s not yet out of the running to feature in Monty’s team, but by making him a vice-captain, you’re guaranteeing his involvement at Celtic Manor.
Paul McGinley is a man steeped in Ryder Cup history and will be remembered as the man who sank the winning putt for my team at The Belfry back in 2002. He did a great job captaining Ireland in the Seve Trophy and knows what it’s all about, as does Thomas, twice a Ryder Cup winner.
With the likes of Rose, Casey, Harrington and Garcia not yet guaranteed a place in the side, Monty has some big decisions to make. But he’ll sleep easier knowing he has the support of three guys.
