Ministers pledge more money to tackle flooding as rain continues
GOVERNMENT ministers have pledged a further £30m to tackle the damage caused by flooding across the UK.
Communities secretary Eric Pickles announced the extra money, which will be available this year to spend on repairs and maintenence. It comes as David Cameron pledged £100m to help the worst-hit areas during Prime Minister’s questions earlier this week, but that funding will not be accessible until next year.
The PM was pressed on why he has not yet visited flood-hit Somerset yesterday, telling journalists that he will visit “when the time is right.” Further criticism was levelled at ministers after Pickles appeared to admit that government departments were slow to respond to the flooding early on. Labour’s Ed Miliband argued that the government had been “slow to help those affected.”
