Mine deaths hit Lonmin
SHARES in platinum producer Lonmin fell by more than four per cent yesterday on the news that nine people were killed in a dispute at its West Marikana mine in South Africa.
Seven Lonmin workers and two policemen have been killed in the violence, which is being blamed on inter-union rivalry between the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction. Production has been severely disrupted since last Friday, when a protest march spurred clashes. Lonmin added that the situation remains tense, but it is understood to be stabilising. The shares fell to 711p.
