CITY GETS GIEVES AND HAWKES
Anyone walking through Leadenhall Market recently should have noticed the arrival of the spectacularly swanky new shop from Savile Row tailoring institution Gieves & Hawkes. In a Georgian building on Lime Street it covers 1,000 square feet, and looks as smart as a St James gentlemen’s club with oak floors, panelled walls and a huge 18th century map of the City. The shop is home to the company’s exceedingly sharp ready-to-wear collection, and also offers a made-to-measure service. You can arrange bespoke appointments in advance, while Gieves & Hawkes will also send a cutter to company offices. MOCK-UP AT POKIT
Tailoring of a different kind is the order of the day at Pokit, a two-person fashion business creating terrific casual suits at its brand new Soho boutique.
Rather than measuring people up, former scientist Bayode Oduwale and stylist Claire Pringle fit customers out in a mock-up suit that they pin into the right fit. What this means is that you have a much clearer idea of how your suit will look, and it takes just two weeks after that to be made. Cloths are all top notch and impeccably sourced – the corduroy numbers are particularly sharp – and the house styles are effortlessly cool. So too are the shoes, bags and ready-to-wear line.
