Burger King is taking on the role of Frankenstein and wants to create a (delicious) monster hybrid burger combining the best bits of its Whopper and the McDonald's Big Mac – aka, the McWhopper.
The burger chain has offered an olive branch to its rival, calling for them to join forces and create the burger equivalent of a musical super-group and end the beef between them.
In adverts in US newspapers and on a dedicated website (mcwhopper.com) the fast food joint wrote an open letter to McDonald's, saying:
Burger King genuinely wants to unite with McDonald's on 21 September, to prepare and serve the McWhopper and get the world talking about peace day. Naturally we'll only proceed if you're on board, so we created this site to help you better understand our proposal and realise the potential.
That date is the UN's Peace Day, as it happens. And Burger King thinks the McWhopper can bring peace to the decades-long rivalry between the two restaurants. It's may not quite be world peace, but you have to start somewhere.
Atlanta is the spot of choice to create a pop-up where employees of both stores come together for one day to serve up only the creation (it just happens to be the half-way point between the headquarters of both), if McDonald's agrees.
Burger-lovers are surely hoping they will. Here's what it would look like.
From the Big Mac:
- Top bun
- Beef patty
- Special sauce
- Middle bun
From the Whopper
- Flame-grilled patty
- Bottom bun
Watch how that might work together below.
McDonald's hasn't yet commented on whether it's on board with the plan. The only sticking point might be the name, with Burger King getting its Whopper in there, but no Big Mac. Perhaps the Big Whopper might be a better option. Or the WhopMac.
