McIlroy wants at least one more Major this year
WORLD No1 Rory McIlroy has targeted adding at least one more Major to his burgeoning collection of titles this year.
McIlroy tees off at Wentworth tomorrow with a rare double in his sights: back-to-back wins at the BMW PGA Championship, and a second title in as many weeks, having won the Wells Fargo Championship in the United States just days ago.
But the 26-year-old’s main goal is to add to his four Majors, having been disappointed to finish fourth when bidding to complete the career grand slam at the Masters last month.
“After the Masters, it was like a weight was taken off my shoulders because it was eight months of anticipation and now that’s gone away,” said the Northern Irishman,” who is grouped with Ryder Cup team-mates Martin Kaymer and Jamie Donaldson at Wentworth.
“I have three great chances to win Majors coming up. I’d like to go to Augusta next year not as a four-time major champion, but to have added at least one to the resume.”
McIlroy’s next Major is June’s US Open, followed by the Open Championship at St Andrews in July and the US PGA in August. Of more immediate concern is retaining the European Tour’s flagship event, and continuing to set a high bar for a swathe of young pretenders, including Masters winner Jordan Spieth.
He added: “I feel like I’m in a generation with a lot of young guys that are coming up and I want to be the best.”
