McIlroy’s Major makes history
NORTHERN Ireland’s Rory McIlroy last night became the youngest player in history to win two Majors with an outstanding eight-shot victory at the US PGA Championship.
McIlroy finished first on 13 under in an impressive tournament for European golfers as England’s David Lynn came a shock second in front of joint-third compatriots Justin Rose and Ian Poulter.
“I don’t think I have let it sink in yet,” said McIlroy. “It was a great round of golf – I am speechless. The game-plan was just to play solid. I got off to a bit of a shaky start, but settled into it and I thought my putting was phenomenal.
“Thanks dad and thanks mum – I’m sure she’s watching at home. I had a good feeling at the start, but I never imagined doing this.
“It means an awful lot to look at the names on that trophy and put mine alongside them.”
Alongside Rose and Poulter in third were the Swede Carl Pettersson and defending champion Keegan Bradley, but while Tiger Woods ended on just two under, Lynn’s finish was by far the greatest surprise. He said: “I got myself into the zone and I was comfortable.”
