London Underground set to cut an extra 400 jobs
LONDON Under ground (LU) is to axe up to 400 further permanent back-office staff in a bid to cut costs and improve efficiency.
These cuts come on top of LU’s plans to reduce 800 ticket office jobs, which is currently at the heart of a bitter dispute with trade unions RMT and Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) and the reason behind a series of strikes.
On top of the 400 cuts LU also said it will leave an equivalent number of vacancies unfilled.
RMT has hit out at the proposed cuts calling the move “savage”
LU’s managing director Mike Brown said LU is facing financial pressures and had a duty to be effective and efficient.
He said: “LU is vital to London and the wider UK economy and we must be fit to deliver our priorities.”
The unions plans two strikes in November over the 800 ticket office jobs that are due to be axed.
