London Mayor offers financial support to Hongkongers settling in the capital
City Hall has announced to use a £900k grant to provide advice on housing, employment and education for the newly arrived Hong Kong migrants.
London is expected to welcome a larger proportion of the projected 153,000 new arrivals from Hong Kong to the UK this year after the government introduced a new visa for Hong Kong British National (Overseas) status holders and their families in January.
The new visa allows them to live, work and study in the country for up to five years. After the period, they can apply to settle and for citizenship after a further twelve months.
City Hall will use the funding as part of the integration work across to ensure new arrivals can settle in London.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I want to be very clear to Hongkongers and their families who have begun arriving in the capital that they are very welcome in London.”
“Our city has a proud history of being home to people from many different backgrounds, and I’m committed to doing all I can to help them settle in London.”
Khan added that City Hall will work with community organisations to discuss how best to support the new arrivals and address any concerns they may have.
