Liverpool 4, Everton 0: Martinez brands Toffees’ showing an ’embarrassment’ as Klopp revels in maiden Merseyside derby
Under-pressure Everton boss Roberto Martinez branded his side’s performance an “embarrassment” after the struggling Toffees capitulated at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool last night.
Liverpool romped to victory and are now unbeaten in 11 Premier League matches against Everton courtesy of goals from Divock Origi, Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, while visiting defender Ramiro Funes Mori was sent off.
Martinez’s side are now winless in seven league games, while victory moved Liverpool to seventh, six points adrift of the top four.
“It’s a feeling of embarrassment, we know we shouldn’t put in a showing like this,” said Martinez.
“I know that sometimes in football there are things you cannot control, a chain of events go against you, but we brought that onto ourselves.
“It was a disaster. A horrible showing that started with the best of intentions but ended up with an inability to get the basics right.”
Two quick-fire goals shortly before half time knocked the stuffing out of Everton. Industrious midfielder James Milner supplied the ammunition for Origi and then Sakho to power headers past Joel Robles.
Funes Mori was shown a straight red for a challenge on Origi, before substitute Sturridge swept home Liverpool’s third and Coutinho added a fourth for a totally dominant Liverpool.
