Arsenal and Manchester City continue to blaze a trail atop the Premier League table with four wins from four. Both teams were pushed last weekend, Arsenal emerging winners over Sunderland despite being on the back foot for long spells at the Stadium of Light, while City battled to a derby win at Manchester United with 10 men. At the bottom, it was another disappointing weekend for Coventry, but Fulham did pick up their first point.

Friday 18th September
Brentford v Chelsea (8 pm)
Chelsea’s bright start has dimmed after defeat at Arsenal and a home draw with a Hull side they were expected to beat comfortably. Next up for Xabi Alonso’s men is a difficult trip to West London neighbours Brentford. The Bees have yet to hit top gear but still sit comfortably in the top half after going unbeaten through their first four games. This feels like a big game: win it, and you can kick on; lose, and you run the risk of slipping into mid-table.
Prediction: Brentford 2-2 Chelsea
Saturday 19th September
Tottenham v Aston Villa (12.30 pm)
Two teams in desperate need of a win clash in North London. Spurs have yet to score in the Premier League but showed flashes of promise in the EFL Cup defeat at Liverpool in midweek. Roberto De Zerbi still has plenty of credit in the bank after their successful relegation battle last season, but he needs to show the benefits of a summer of heavy spending sooner rather than later. Villa started slowly last season, but there is a different feel to the club currently after losing several key players.
Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Aston Villa
Brighton v Arsenal (3 pm)
Arsenal showed they can win without dominating at Sunderland last weekend, but a trip to the Amex presents a different type of challenge. Brighton don’t play in the same “in your face” way as the Wearsiders, but will try to weave their way through the champions. That approach worked perfectly at Coventry last weekend with Fabian Hurzeler’s side cruising to a 5-0 win. This is another stiff test for the Gunners.
Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Arsenal
Everton v Ipswich (3 pm)
Everton ground out a draw at Tottenham last week despite being under the cosh for long spells. It was another example of the solidity of David Moyes’ side, but they will hope to show more creativity against an Ipswich side that has impressed on their top-flight return. The win last time out at Crystal Palace was another marker that suggests they will be okay this season. Whether they are good enough to win at Hill Dickinson is another question, though.
Prediction: Everton 2-0 Ipswich
Newcastle v Hull (3 pm)
Few would have predicted Hull would be heading to Tyneside in a Champions League spot, albeit at this very early stage. The Tigers passed another major test last week at Chelsea, going to one of the so-called Big Six and preserving their unbeaten record. They will fancy their chances of extending that run against Newcastle following their abject display at Elland Road on Monday night. Matthias Jaissle’s men were blown away by Leeds, and the home fans will expect a response.
Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Hull
Nottingham Forest v Coventry (5.30 pm)
We’re only four games in, but Coventry need to start picking up points before belief drains completely from Frank Lampard’s men. The 5-0 defeat to Brighton last weekend was another alarming result, despite playing well in the first half. Forest kick-started their season with a win at Aston Villa, and it is nigh-on impossible to think they won’t pick up another three points in this one.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 3-0 Coventry
Sunday 20th September
Bournemouth v Liverpool (2 pm)
Liverpool impressed in the midweek win over Spurs, but now needs to take that form into the league. The Merseysiders had seemed to be gathering momentum, but that stalled with a goalless draw against Fulham last weekend. Bournemouth have yet to win but have shown plenty of promise under Marco Rose. That promise now needs to generate points. It will be an emotional return to the Vitality Stadium for Andoni Iraola, and we think he will enjoy his afternoon.
Prediction: Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool
Leeds v Crystal Palace (2 pm)
Leeds’ task is to repeat the performance they produced against Newcastle. The West Yorkshire side overpowered their visitors and will hope to do the same against a Palace side that has yet to produce consistent results under new boss Pierre Sage. Another defeat here could reinforce the idea that it could be a long season for the Eagles.
Prediction: Leeds 3-0 Crystal Palace
Manchester City v Sunderland (2 pm)
City showed a gritty side at Old Trafford last Sunday with a win over United that was not without controversy. Whatever the rights and wrongs of Erling Haaland’s winner, what is not in question was the impressive way Enzo Maresca set up his side following Phil Foden’s first-half dismissal. Sunderland are never easy opponents, as Arsenal found out, but with this game coming after their first foray into Europe in over 50 years, it could be one game too far.
Prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Sunderland
Fulham v Manchester United (4.30 pm)
United were poor against 10-man City, failing to create much despite the man advantage. There are already some small doubts growing around Michael Carrick, which seems harsh given the job he did last season. A win at Fulham will silence the sceptics and get United back on track. Fulham have had a good week, securing a point at Liverpool and then winning at West Ham in the EFL Cup.
