    England’s Simon Dyson claimed the fifth European Tour title of his career with a one-stroke victory at the Irish Open. Dyson’s narrow success ahead of Australian Richard Green earned him a place in this week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

    Liam Tancock claimed Great Britain’s third gold medal at the World Championships in Shanghai with an impressive swim in the 50m backstroke event. The defending champion, who has now won five medals in four World Championships, touched in 24.50s, finishing just ahead of France’s Camille Lacourt.

    Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed further speculation about any approach by the club to sign Dutch international Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan. “Absolute nonsense.
