Liberal Democrats set for huge defeat in Oldham, polls suggest
THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS could face a crushing defeat in this week’s parliamentary by-election, two opinion polls published yesterday show.
Support for Nick Clegg’s party trails Labour by 17 points in the marginal seat of Oldham East and Saddleworth in polls for two national Sunday newspapers.
Thursday’s vote in the Greater Manchester constituency is viewed as a key test of the Lib Dem role in the coalition government.
A Sunday Telegraph poll, which interviewed 1,500 voters, put Labour in the lead on 46 per cent, the Lib Dems on 29 per cent and the Conservatives on 15 per cent.
An ICM poll for the Mail on Sunday, which spoke to 500 adults, gave Labour 44 per cent, the Lib Dems 27 per cent and the Tories 18 per cent.
