Labour backs stronger ties with Europe in bid to grow economy
SHADOW business secretary Chuka Umunna is set to deliver a strong message on Europe in a speech this evening, warning that “shutting ourselves off poses a huge threat to our future prosperity.”
In an address to the EEF manufacturing conference, Labour’s Umunna will outline Agenda 2030, a plan focused around increasing the number of middle-income jobs in the UK economy.
He will also argue that austerity is not an economic policy, in a direct attack on the Conservatives, and praise Ken Clarke’s stance on Europe and trade.
“Success in the world requires international engagement; an open and outward looking approach to the world. To make the most of our opportunities around the globe, we must remain open to the world, shaping the forces of change in partnership with other countries – in Europe and beyond,” he will say.
Other conference speakers include Ken Clarke and Vince Cable.
