Kaymer flunks chance to usurp Westwood as Bjorn wins in Qatar
ENGLAND’S Lee Westwood retained top spot in the world rankings as Germany’s Martyn Kaymer failed to capitalise on his chance to depose him at the Qatar Masters.
Kaymer, 26, needed a top-two finish to become No1 but could only manage a tie for 28th place as Westwood failed to make the cut.
The tournament was won by Ryder Cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn who carded a three-under-par 69 on the final day to finish 14 under par and seal his 11th European Tour Title.
The Dane, 39, led by one overnight and parred 14 holes before birdies at 15, 16 and 18 secured victory.
“It’s a big win for me and hopefully it can push me on to bigger things now,” Bjorn said.
Kaymer, who finished on two under par after a final-round 71, said: “I was in a position to finish in the top 10 I thought but the greens are not my friends here in Qatar.”
