It’s finally happening: Mark Zuckerberg confirms Facebook is working on a “dislike” button
It’s finally happening: Facebook is working on a dislike button.
Founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed during a meeting at Facebook's headquarters in California that the company is planning to try out other buttons than “like”:
It's important to give people more options than just “like”.
Not every moment is a good moment. If you share something that’s sad like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away, it may not be comfortable to like that post…I do think it’s important to give people more options than liking it.
In other words, you’ll soon be able to “dislike” posts to your heart’s content.
Its counterpart, the "like" button, was rolled out in 2009, and the logo has since become synonymous with the social network. But until now it's been the only button available.
Users have been campaigning for a "dislike" button for years, saying that a “like” isn’t suitable in all situations, but Facebook has repeatedly resisted demands for such a "voting mechanism" on posts. But now the social media giant is finally bowing to popular pressure:
Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.
Facebook has been working on the button for a while, and according to Zuckerberg, there's an "idea" the company is trialling now. If it works, it should be rolled out on a larger scale soon.
