I fear for Broad’s safety in Oz, says Hussain
FORMER England captain Nasser Hussain fears England paceman Stuart Broad could be attacked during the return Ashes series in Australia, following incendiary remarks by the tourists’ coach Darren Lehmann.
Lehmann yesterday said he hoped Australia fans Down Under would “give it to him from the word go for the whole summer” in the hope that Broad “cries and goes home” later this year.
His remarks, aired on a radio show in his homeland hours before the start of the fifth Test, related to Broad’s refusal to walk when he nicked behind in the first Test, an act that Lehmann termed “blatant cheating”.
Hussain cited the pub fracas between Australia’s David Warner and England’s Joe Root this year as evidence that cricketers are particularly at risk of public altercations.
“These boys go out on an evening, they don’t sit in their hotel room. That’s more likely where Broad will have to be careful,” he said.
“Because after these words, there might be some Aussie out there who, after having a few beers, wants to have a little go at Broad.”
“Broad – especially after the Warner incident at a bar in Birmingham – and the management of Broad away from the cricket will have to be very, very careful.”
