I danced my way to Serena Slam, reveals Williams
SHE MAY be the oldest person to win a grand slam title in the open era but Serena Williams insists she has never felt fitter after clinching her sixth Wimbledon title.
Williams, 33, beat Spain’s Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 in Saturday’s final to complete the so-called Serena Slam – holding all four Majors at once – for the second time in her career, and move to within a US Open victory next month of becoming only the second woman to achieve a calendar slam – winning all four in the same year – after Steffi Graf in 1988. The American world No1 puts her longevity down to an evolving fitness regime that has taken in cycling, running, boxing and, more recently, modern dance.
“I feel almost better now,” she said. “I do have some aches and pains. But overall physically I feel like I’m better, more fit. I feel like I can do more than I did 10, 12 years ago. I just keep reinventing myself in terms of working out, in terms of my game. It’s been working.”
