Hanks raps Wasps after Leeds sham
WASPS director of rugby Tony Hanks blasted his below-par side after they crashed to a shock defeat against bottom-of-the-table Leeds at Adams Park.
Andy Key’s Tykes stunned their hosts with a first league win of the season, while also denying the London side the chance to move up to second in the Premiership table.
In a desperately scrappy affair, five penalties from the boot of Ceiron Thomas secured a well-needed victory for the visitors.
Afterwards, a seething Hanks paid tribute to Leeds before hitting out at his own players.
“That was a special day for Leeds. Take nothing away from them, they really took it to us and deserved to win,” he said. “This has got to be considered a wake-up call. We have a disappointed, frustrated and angry changing room. A bad day at the office needs to be analysed.”
As Hanks bemoaned Wasps’ loss, Leeds director of rugby Key was breathing a huge sigh of relief.
“It was not the prettiest performance, but we gnarled it out and the players are delighted,” he said.
“We are a team who are developing and growing.”
Elsewhere, Newcastle secured a second league win on the bounce, beating Worcester 14-3, to climb to sixth in the table.
