Golf Comment: Lynn goes from his sickbed to fantastic Portugal Masters win
AFTER seeing David Lynn so ill last week, I didn’t imagine he would even make it to the Algarve, let alone win the Portugal Masters.
David was struggling with a virus when he was away with me at the Seve Trophy and he wasn’t going to play in his singles match on the Sunday against Miguel Angel Jimenez, but Simon Khan had already pulled out and he had no choice.
The Portugal Masters was his 13th event of the year too and his last chance to keep his card, so it really was a unique situation. To go and win was fantastic.
A mention too for Justin Walters who lost his mother recently, but had his dad there watching and when he holed a 40-foot putt on the 18th you’ve never seen such emotion and someone so happy.
Jimmy Walker picked up his maiden victory in California, but the real story was with the two players who finished behind him.
Vijay Singh is playing on the Seniors Tour now, so it’s quite incredible that he was second. And Brooks Koepka, playing on his first main Tour event, is supposed to be the real deal so will have been very disappointed not to win.
Rory McIlroy’s problematic year continues off the course, with his split from girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki and the start of legal proceedings against former agents. He needs to get his head down and play some good golf again.
