Gatland rubbishes Anglo-French alternative plans to Heineken Cup
WALES coach Warren Gatland has warned an Anglo-French replacement for the Heineken Cup is doomed to failure unless the Celtic nations and Italy can be persuaded to take part.
England and France’s top clubs have declared their intention to compete in the Rugby Champions Cup from next season, having served notice to Heineken Cup chiefs ERC. The move is a result of failing to agree a larger share of places and revenue for existing competitions.
Yet the position of Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Italian sides remains uncertain and Gatland believes that could scupper the rebel effort.
“I don’t see an Anglo-French competition being successful or lasting that long,” he said. “I think all parties want full representation from all countries. There needs to be protection for a Scottish or Italian team. Without their involvement [it] could impact the Six Nations.”
