EU referendum: Change ballot wording to be fair, government told by Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission is calling on the government to change the wording of the ballot for the EU referendum in order to avoid bias.
As the EU referendum bill potentially paving the way for a Brexit makes its way through parliament, the current phrasing is "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union?".
However the Commission is now suggesting that an additional element be added to the question, which would result in it being the longer "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"
Instead of a straightforward yes/no response, this would require voters to explicitly state "remain a member of the EU" or "leave the EU".
The vote is due to take place some time in 2017.
