England Sevens beaten to title in Hong Kong final
ENGLAND coach Simon Amor saluted his emerging squad after they were beaten to the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sevens title by HSBC World Series champions New Zealand yesterday.
Amor’s men went one better than last week’s third place in Tokyo, finishing runners-up in the Sevens calendar’s most celebrated event after losing the final 26-7.
It amounted to another encouraging weekend for an England squad featuring several new faces, having beaten South Africa and defending champions Fiji in the knockout rounds.
“I’m incredibly proud, to play all three of the big teams on one day, with seven of the players making their Hong Kong debut, is a big achievement,” said Amor.
“We have made so much progress in recent weeks and months but unfortunately we weren’t quite good enough in that final game.”
