England move closer to luring coach Gillespie
ENGLAND moved a step closer to appointing Yorkshire boss Jason Gillespie to their vacant head coach’s position after director of cricket Andrew Strauss held talks with the former Australian seamer yesterday.
While no formal offer has been made, it is understood that Strauss has persuaded Gillespie to take the job and an announcement on Peter Moores’s full-time replacement could be made as early as Tuesday.
Strauss revealed yesterday that he was talking to “a number of candidates” about the position, but that a deal could be done quickly for the right man and someone who shared his cricketing philosophy.
Gillespie had earlier this week said that he would need “persuading” to leave his job at Yorkshire, having led the Headingley club to their first county championship title since 2001 last summer.
England are currently under the caretaker command of Moores’s former assistant Paul Farbrace, although a swift appointment would see Gillespie in place for the Ashes series against his countrymen, which starts on 8 July.
