Eagles swoop for QPR keeper as Real tell United to forget Ramos
CRYSTAL Palace have expanded their goalkeeping options by signing former England Under-21 stopper Alex McCarthy from Queens Park Rangers.
McCarthy, 25, only moved to Loftus Road from Reading last summer but failed to unseat regular No1 Rob Green and has now become the 10th departure since QPR were relegated in May. The former Wimbledon trainee said: “I’m over the moon. When I first heard about Palace’s interest I was excited because I really wanted to be back in the Premier League. Now, here I am.”
Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez, meanwhile, has warned Manchester United to abandon their pursuit of Sergio Ramos, insisting the unsettled Spain defender is definitely staying at the club.
United have shown interest in signing the 29-year-old, who is in dispute with Real over a new contract, and want him as part of any deal to let goalkeeper David de Gea go the other way. United have so far resisted Real’s interest in De Gea, who will be out of contract nest year.
“Sergio will be staying with us,” former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Benitez said. “For me, 100 per cent. I insist that it is clear for me and the club, Sergio will be here. He’s a key player for us.”
