Defoe treble keeps up flying start and sends Spurs to top
HULL (1) vs TOTTENHAM (5)
ENGLAND hero Jermain Defoe scored the first Premier League hat-trick of the season as Tottenham ensured there was no repeat of last season’s horror start.
Spurs bagged just two points from their first eight games of last season, but have enjoyed a storming start to this campaign by following up their superb win over Liverpool on Saturday with a 5-1 thrashing of Hull last night.
Defoe began the season with a brace for England in their friendly against Holland last week, but went one better with an impressive treble at the KC Stadium which took Harry Redknapp’s men to the top of the table.
Defoe gave Spurs a deserved lead in the 10th minute from Tom Huddlestone’s pass before midfielder Wilson Palacios burst through to smash his first goal in English football four minutes later.
New signing Stephen Hunt bagged his second goal in as many games for the Tigers but Spurs, inspired by midfield duo Luka Modric and Huddlestone, consolidated their two-goal advantage just before the break when Defoe broke clear to score.
Robbie Keane headed home a fourth on 78 minutes before Defoe completed his hat-trick in injury time to ensure Spurs began a new season with back-to-back league wins for the first time in 14 years.
