Daily Mirror hit by four phone hacking claims
THE PHONE hacking scandal that brought down the News of the World threatened to pull in Mirror Group Newspapers yesterday, after four individuals reportedly issued High Court claims against the firm.
Former England football manager Sven-Göran Eriksson and three others have filed claims alleging phone hacking at The Daily Mirror during Piers Morgan’s time as editor.
Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati, former Blackburn Rovers captain Garry Flitcroft and Abbie Gibson, a former nanny for David and Victoria Beckham are reported as the other three claimants.
But Trinity Mirror told City A.M. it didn’t know about any of these claims. “We have no comment, we are unaware action has been taken at the High Court,” the firm said. The group – parent company for The Daily Mirror, The People, and hundreds of regional publications – has consistently said its journalists “work within the criminal law and the Press Complaints Commission code of conduct.”
Piers Morgan told the Leveson inquiry that he had no knowledge of phone hacking during his nine-year stint as editor of The Daily Mirror.
In a separate development, new Trinity Mirror boss Simon Fox rejigged the firm’s top team yesterday.
