Costa may miss season opener, says Mourinho
CHELSEA manager Jose Mourinho is sweating on the fitness of striker Diego Costa for Saturday’s Premier League opener after his side rounded off a miserable pre-season by losing to Fiorentina last night.
A makeshift Blues side managed just two shots on target as defender Gonzalo Rodridguez’s first-half strike condemned them to a second consecutive defeat and a winless preparation for their title defence.
Costa, Chelsea’s top scorer last season, missed the game at Stamford Bridge and Mourinho conceded the Spain frontman was starting the new campaign as he spent much of the last – as an injury doubt. “I don’t know whether he will be fit to play on Saturday,” said the Blues boss.
Tottenham, meanwhile, endured a mixed evening in Munich. They welcomed goalkeeper Hugo Lloris back to action after injury in a 2-0 friendly win over AC Milan, earned by Nacer Chadli and Tom Carroll,
But Spurs chiefs failed in an attempt to bring forward their flight home, meaning they will spend barely 24 hours in London before travelling north for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at Manchester United.
