Cold snap to thaw today
THE MET Office last night promised a respite from the cold snap – but warned it could return next week.
Most of central London will be above freezing and no more snow is forecast to fall over the next few days.
It did however issue a warning of black ice for some parts of south east London.
But over the course of today the last of the snow will melt, it said.
Passengers flying from Gatwick Airport yesterday faced disruptions as snowfall forced the closure of its runway until 4pm.
Passengers were advised to contact their airline before travelling to the Sussex airport.
A spokesman said: “We regret the disruption, but the safety of aircraft and passengers is our top priority.”
Rail passengers also faced delays and cancellations.
South West Trains and Southeastern yesterday ran with delays and some services were cancelled.
More than 200 schools were affected by the weather in Sussex, while grit shortages caused havoc on the roads. Pot holes have appeared across the country as water froze inside cracks in tarmac. Harrow Council in north west London estimated the repair bill would be £2m.
