Clubs mull end to away goals
TOP football clubs are considering scrapping the away goals rule in a move that could change the face of European competition.
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the topic had been debated by the continent’s leading coaches at a forum yesterday.
“There was a bit of a debate about whether it has any significance today,” he said. “Some think it is not as important as it used to be. The attacking emphasis on the game today means more teams go away from home and win.”
Under the rule, when teams are level after a two-legged tie, the side who scored more goals away from home progresses.
