Clegg says government is in denial over future cuts
LIBERAL Democrat leader Nick Clegg yesterday said the chancellor was “in denial” about the scale of public spending cuts needed to pay down Britain’s yawning deficit.
Branding the Budget “a footnote to 13 years of failure”, Clegg accused the government of failing to offer “honesty on spending” or “fairness on taxation”.
Clegg, who could end up playing kingmaker after the election if polls pointing to a hung parliament are correct, said the Lib Dems were the only party willing to face up to the disastrous state of the public finances.
He is desperate to show voters that he would be fiscally prudent if he holds a senior cabinet position in the next government.
“Neither party is being straight with the British people about the tough times ahead,” he said. “We are still borrowing £450m every single day.”
