CMS
Anna Burchner has been promoted to a partner in law firm CMS' London tax team. Anna has been a senior associate in the tax team since 2005 and is noted for her expertise in both international and domestic tax, particularly funds and financial services related work. She has significant experience on the tax structuring of high-value, multi-jurisdictional transactions, advising banks, funds, investors and sponsors on investment issues. Additionally Anna holds an LLM in International and EU Tax from the University of Leiden.
Smith & Williamson
Smith & Williamson has appointed John Harley as a non-executive director. John has held senior management roles at PwC and Ernst & Young, with a wide range of experience in both audit and advisory work across a number of sectors. Since retiring from EY in 2011, he has held a number of non-executive positions in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. He is currently chairman of the University of Brighton and Trade River Finance, a panel member of the Competition and Markets Authority and chairman of the audit and risk committees of NCS Trust.
Latham & Watkins
Michael Lacovara is joining law firm Latham & Watkins as a partner in the litigation & trial department in the New York office. Michael specialises in antitrust and complex commercial disputes across diverse industries, including the technology, financial services and natural resources sectors. He has advised on antitrust, complex commercial, tax and tort matters in more than 30 states and 10 federal circuits across the US. Michael also has an extensive background in investment banking, having co-founded and served as president and CEO of Cortview Capital Holdings, a securities trading and investment banking firm. He will join Latham & Watkins from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in New York and London.
Baker & McKenzie
Global law firm, Baker & McKenzie's Johannesburg office has appointed Gerhard Rudolph and Morne van der Merwe as co-managing partners, and Wildu du Plessis as Africa head from July. Wildu has over 25 years’ experience and represents and advises leading domestic and international financial institutions on a wide range of financing transactions. Gerhard founded dispute-focused firm Rudolph, Bernstein & Associates in 2008 before joining Baker & McKenzie with his team in December 2012. Morne, on the other hand, has over 20 years of experience and assists clients in matters involving mergers and acquisitions, securities law, mining transactions among other issues.
