Champions League: Moyes delight at in-shape Rooney’s top form
MANCHESTER UNITED 1 vs REAL SOCIEDAD 0
MANCHESTER United manager David Moyes believes hours of hard work on the training pitch is the secret to striker Wayne Rooney’s sparkling form for club and country.
The 27-year-old has scored seven times in 13 games this term and contributed to the only goal at Old Trafford last night when his shot came back off the post and was turned into his own net by Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez.
And Moyes believes Rooney’s improved condition is the key to his form.
“We just want a top player to play well and he is,” said Moyes. “He’s worked hard in training, he’s in good shape and not just Manchester United but England are seeing that as well.”
Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson previously revealed Rooney submitted a transfer request at the end of last season, upset at a lack of playing time and detailed exchanges between the two in his new book: My Autobiography, out today.
But Rooney said he felt no animosity towards his old boss.
“He’s come back and corrected the story that I put a transfer request in. He’s gone back and proven that I didn’t,” said Rooney.
“I’m enjoying playing under the new manager.”
Martinez’s own goal, following a fine solo run from Rooney, opened the scoring on two minutes.
Antoine Griezmann curled a free-kick against the post for Sociedad, while Antonio Valenica was also denied by the woodwork.
