Champions League: Missed chances frustrate Moyes in United draw
REAL SOCIEDAD 0 v MANCHESTER UNITED 0
MANCHESTER United boss David Moyes bemoaned his side’s wastefulness after striker Robin van Persie’s penalty miss denied them almost certain progress to the Champions League last 16.
Van Persie also hit the woodwork in open play, before midfielder Marouane Fellaini was sent off to complete a frustrating night.
United remain top of Group A, yet could have taken a huge step towards the knockout stage if they had been more ruthless. Instead, it remains a three-way scrap for the top two places.
“It was a game we should have won. It was there for us to take the points and get ourselves in a really strong position,” said Moyes. “We’ve not done it, but we’re capable of doing it in the other games as well. At the moment we’re still top, we’re in a good position, but we really should have taken three points.
“When you get games like this, people in football will tell you, you have to take your chances.”
Substitute Ashley Young won the 70th-minute penalty for a tug, although his reaction appeared extravagant. Van Persie, however, struck the same post that had early denied him.
Fellaini summed up a difficult evening for United in injury time when the Belgian was shown a second yellow card for persistent foul play.
