Chairman’s Thai hol during leak revealed
TEMPERS FLARED yesterday as it was revealed that BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg was holidaying in Thailand for a lengthy period after the 20 April explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig.
It is understood that Svanberg was yachting in South East Asia at the time, while his colleagues were scrambling to understand how to plug up the oil leak spewing hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
According to reports yesterday, the first time he made an appearance in Houston after the explosion was on his way back from Thailand and on travelling to Europe.
Svanberg alongside his Swedish partner Louise Julian, had been to Australia, Bali and Singapore, according to reports.
BP said that it had “no idea” how to respond to the news that Svanberg was holidaying at the time of the explosion but described it as “private business”.
Svanberg has been widely criticised for taking a back seat approach in responding to the disaster, which is now costing BP billions of dollars and devastating the Gulf coast.
