Captain Strauss could be rested for Bangladesh tour, hints England chief
NATIONAL selector Geoff Miller has given his strongest hint yet that captain Andrew Strauss could be rested for England’s forthcoming tour of Bangladesh.
Strauss has led his side from the front in regaining the Ashes last summer and then battling to at least a draw in the current series in South Africa. But with a hectic year ahead, including the ICC World Twenty20 and home series against Bangladesh and Pakistan ahead of the Ashes campaign in November, England chiefs will want to keep their talismanic skipper as fresh as possible.
England name the touring squad after this week’s fourth and final Test with South Africa in Johannesburg, and Strauss’ inclusion is the main talking point. “We’re in discussion,” Miller said. “There might be one or two rested, but we want to keep this momentum going – so the crux of the side will be pretty similar.
“Captaincy-wise, that is another area we can look at. There is an opportunity to rest if we need to do that. But I’ll discuss that with the present captain and coach and find out what is the best way forward.
“Afterwards, there is an awful lot of cricket to be played. It’s a constant, constant fixture list. We don’t want fatigue if we can possibly help it.”
