Cameron backs troubled taxman after damning report from MPs
DOWNING Street has hit back at the committee of MPs which claimed the taxman had a “cosy” relationship with major businesses.
A spokesman for David Cameron highlighted figures showing HM Revenue & Customs collected a “record” £468bn in tax last year. Its new approach has also been praised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, he added. It came as Vodafone criticised the Public Accounts Committee report, which highlighted a series of controversial tax deals, as “unjust, unwarranted and based on gross untruths”.
Shadow chief Treasury secretary, Rachel Reeves said: “There should not be special treatment for large companies at the expense of small businesses and individual taxpayers.”
