Broadgate Circle to get makeover
The owners of the Broadgate estate in the City have lodged plans to overhaul its main shopping area, in a move that could revive last year’s battle to preserve the area’s post-war architecture. The developer British Land and private equity firm Blackstone said yesterday they aim replace some of the existing office space around Broadgate Circle with more shops and seven new restaurants. The famous Arena ice rink would be retained during the winter months. English Heritage has confirmed that the proposals would safeguard the architectural significance of the structure and would gain their support. Tim Roberts of British Land said: “The stronger retail element will allow more people to linger and enjoy and interact with the space and performances and activities in the Circle.”
