Brighton to London line re-opened after derailed train, and commuters offered compensation – but delays still expected
Nearly 24 hours after a train derailed in Brighton, services between London and the coastal city have restarted – but there are still delays expected this afternoon.
Commuters heading home from London Bridge and Victoria faced widespread disruption yesterday evening as there were no trains between the two cities throughout the night and into this afternoon, as engineers struggled to re-rail the train.

The situation was excerbated by two separate line-side fires and a fatality on a different part of Southern's network, the operator said.
By 2pm today the Brighton mainline had reopened, but residual delays were expected for the first two, and then three, hours.
Trains were still being delayed by up to half an hour this afternoon, according to Network Rail.
Update: This has now been extended again. Disruption will continue until at least 4:45pm.
There is a glimmer of a silver lining, however. Commuters have been offered compensation if their journey was delayed by more than half an hour.
