Brave Brentford’s cup run over after penalty heartache
BIRMINGHAM’S veteran striker Kevin Phillips prevented League One Brentford from claiming another sizeable Premier League scalp in the Carling Cup.
Andy Scott’s Bees, who edged out Everton in the previous round, were moments away from causing another upset before 37-year-old Phillips pounced in injury time to cancel out Sam Wood’s 68th minute effort.
The sides couldn’t be separated in extra time and with Birmingham 4-3 up in the penalty shootout, Craig Woodman buckled under the pressure and saw his spot kick saved by Maik Taylor.
Elsewhere, West Bromwich Albion’s impressive start to the season continued with a fine 4-1 win at Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Leicester City, while Northampton Town, conquerors of Liverpool, were unable to repeat the trick at Portman Road, losing 3-1 at Ipswich.
Finally, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was able to celebrate a victory against his old club Swansea as the Latics ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against the Welsh outfit, with record signing Mauro Boselli finally netting his first goal for the club.
