Boris pledges new tunnel
LONDON MAYOR Boris Johnson has pledged to build a new tunnel under the Thames within the next decade as part of a plan to ease congestion problems for commuters into the city.
Addressing government leaders last night, Johnson said a crossing between the Greenwich peninsula and Silvertown in the Royal Docks, could see 2,400 vehicles an hour move in each direction, relieving pressure on existing tunnels at Blackwall and Rotherhithe.
The tunnel is part of a further phase of investment in schemes that the mayor has put forward to support the capital’s growth. These also include plans to deliver a new ferry crossing between Beckton and Thamesmead by 2017 and the extension of the Northern line to Battersea.
Johnson also announced the Hammersmith Flyover, which has been shut for three weeks, would be partially reopened today.
