Boris plans cable car Thames crossing before the Olympics
LONDONERS may be able to enjoy panoramic views of the capital while traversing the Thames at over 50 metres above ground level, if Boris Johnson’s latest travel plans come to fruition.
The Mayor of London yesterday unveiled plans to build a privately-funded cable car crossing between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, carrying up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction and taking just five minutes to travel between the O2 and ExCeL centres.
City Hall said that the cable car was just one of a number of initiatives being considered to increase the number of river crossings east of Tower Bridge. Subject to funding and planning permission, the cable car could be ready before the 2012 Olympics.
“A cable car spanning the majestic Thames would not only provide a unique and pioneering addition to London’s skyline, but also offer a serene and joyful journey across the river,” Johnson said. “Passengers would be able to drink in the truly spectacular views of the Olympic Park and iconic London landmarks whilst shaving valuable minutes from their travelling time.” The Mayor said he aimed to finance the construction of the scheme privately, adding that “a number of organisations” had already expressed an interest in the project.
