Beckham signs off on a high
FORMER England captain David Beckham has turned his attention to resolving his future after fulfilling his ambition of leading LA Galaxy to the Major League Soccer title.
Beckham (right), who helped set up the only goal as Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup final late on Sunday night, is at a crossroads having reached the end of his five-year contract in California.
The 36-year-old is widely expected to return to Europe and sign for Qatari-owned, big-spending Paris St Germain, in a move that would help his dream of representing Great Britain at next summer’s London 2012 Olympics.
Beckham has not ruled out staying in America, but hinted after the final that his American dream, which began in 2006, was coming to a close.
“Whether I stay or not, I’ve had an amazing five years,” said the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star. “I’ve loved it here. The fans have been unbelievable, the owners, the players – every one of them are heroes. They’ve been incredible all season and this has capped it off.”
QPR owner Tony Fernandes told City A.M. earlier this month that they had made a tentative approach to sign Beckham, but admitted any deal was probably “dead in the water”.
